## Course overview Retail is often treated as a job you can do without knowing anything. That is exactly why so many people find it frustrating: without the commercial picture, half of what you are asked to do looks arbitrary. Why does the layout keep changing? Why does the manager care so much about a £40 stock discrepancy? Why can you not just take the item back? This course supplies the picture. You will learn how a shop makes money and how thin the margins actually are, why stock accuracy drives everything from availability to bonus, what merchandising is really doing, and — the part that carries genuine legal weight — how to make an age-restricted sale properly and refuse one safely. It is written for people who intend to be good at this, whether for a season or a career. The colleagues who get promoted in retail are almost always the ones who understood the commercial picture first. ## Who this course is for Sales assistants, supervisors, stockroom and click-and-collect staff, people returning to work, and anyone preparing for a Level 2 Retailer apprenticeship who wants the knowledge in advance. No experience is assumed. ## How the course is taught Five modules, each with three lessons and a graded knowledge check mapped to that module's tasks. Every lesson ends with a **Check your understanding** prompt, and a final assessment covers the whole course. The arithmetic modules are worked through step by step with real numbers. You will not need anything beyond basic maths, but you will finish able to calculate a margin, which a surprising number of retail supervisors cannot. ## Assessment Five module knowledge checks and a final assessment at a 70% pass mark, unlimited attempts, with written feedback on every question. Open-response questions are marked against a published rubric. ## Recognition and scope This course is **aligned to the knowledge themes** of the Level 2 Retailer apprenticeship standard. It is **not an apprenticeship**, carries no end-point assessment, and is not a licence or certification to sell age-restricted products — that authority comes from your employer's own training and authorisation process, which this course prepares you to understand rather than replaces. You receive an EduQan certificate of completion, verifiable by any employer through our public credential check. ## Progression Common next steps are the Level 2 Retailer apprenticeship, a team leader or supervisor route, or movement into stock control, visual merchandising or buying. Within our catalogue it pairs directly with Customer Service Excellence.
