What you'll be able to do
- Explain why an organisation's systems need interfaces, and what a point-to-point estate costs
- Read a record in delimited, fixed-width, XML and JSON form, and say what each format makes easy and what it hides
- Read an HL7 v2 message by hand — segments, fields, components, delimiters and escape sequences
- Read an acknowledgement, tell an accept from a reject, and say what the sender should do about it
- Describe what an integration engine does, and follow one message through an engine log
- Name the fault in a broken message, and say whether it should be rejected, quarantined or alerted
- Read an interface specification critically, and write one for a simple feed
Who this is for
The person who has to understand interfaces without building them. Service desk and application support, who get the call when a feed stops. System analysts and project managers, who keep being handed specifications. Clinical and operational staff moving into digital roles. And anyone heading for an engineering certificate who has never read a message line by line.
What you will do
Nothing is installed. Every one of the eight labs is a reading lab worked against supplied artefacts: real-shaped HL7 messages, an engine log, a deliberately imperfect interface specification, and a pack of ten broken messages you have to diagnose.
You will read one patient record carried five different ways, parse an HL7 v2 message by hand, match acknowledgements to the messages they answer, follow a single message through an engine log to four different outcomes, and finish by writing an interface specification of your own from a two-line email.
What is assumed
No programming. No engine. No command line. If you can open a text file and count carefully, you can do all of this.
Where it leads
ECIF is the first of three. It stands alone and carries its own certificate. Those continuing take (ECSIA) EduQan Certified Systems Integration Engineer, and then (ECHIA) EduQan Certified Healthcare Integration Architect.
